How fast is instant messaging?

Question: How fast is instant messaging?

(Posted by: mxpowers on 2009-10-10 07:47:49)

I know instant messaging is "instance. " But what's the speed? Could it be faster then the speed of light? To add to this question: If you clocked how long an instance message took from one pc to the other... How fast would it go in MPH?

No. As what you type needs to be transcoded and then navigate its way through the internet to the receiving computer and then be decoded it is not faster than the speed of light. The further away the receiving device is and the slower the internet connection the longer it will take for the message to arrive. Typically this is less than 1 second.

No it's not faster than the speed of light. (which is about 3 million meters per second) but it is pretty fast. the speed depends on the distance between computers and the internet connection on both computers.
