Personally I've had no joy with Spybot, or most of the others mentioned! In my experience Service Pack 2 for Xp and then installing Yahoo toolbar with anti spy has seen me right. That said, once you get some of the worst spyware the only solution is to re-format and re-install, even the best spyware programs cannot remove all of the spyware out there.

Adaare and defender are the 2 that will do the job and run one and then the other,clears all.

For spyware, get spybot and when you install make sure you activate tea timer, it is to protect your registry so malware doesn't get there in the first place. for virus get AVG free from grisoft.com yahoo toolbar's popup blocker is great too.
